Exploring Phuket beaches by scooter

There are so many beaches in Phuket

We spent a lot of time cruising around the island of Phuket on the scooters and exploring what Phuket had to offer. The beaches that border Patong Beach are really beautiful, they’re very hilly and so offer great views of Patong Beach and the cityscapes. There is so much more to see, I think we might be back sooner than we thought.

Kalim Beach – first stop in our tour of Phuket beaches

Just to the north of Patong Beach is Kalim Beach, its only a small strip of beach but had a few people on it, as you head up into the hills its mainly resorts and then restaurants on the ocean side of the road. We went to a place called Sea Salt Lounge and Grill.

Food was amazing, we had oysters with chorizo and cheese, croquettes, Asian greens as entrée and then lobster mac and cheese and scallop pasta as mains. Delicious and we sat right on the waters edge and it was quite a beautiful spot. Expect to pay what you would pay in Australia for a meal here, its a bit more fancy but worth it for a nice lunch with a gorgeous view.

They let me launch the drone from here too so that was a bonus, got some great shots of the coast line, city and the beach. There were also a fair few people fishing from this beach so it must be an alright spot to fish, we saw so many bait fish right down from where we were fishing, then a couple of guys came with nets so we imagined we would be eating them later that night at the markets! 🤪

Next stop: Kamala Beach

We rode on further from Kamil Beach and you come around to Kamala Beach, another beautiful beach and beautiful surroundings, lovely for a look. There is honestly so much beautiful coast line and Phuket beaches to explore.

You could spend so much time just riding around the island, great for the early mornings cause nothing is open yet, if you are lucky you will find a cute coffee shop or a fresh juice somewhere. But we rode around and stopped for some photos and to fly the drone.

Lucky Beach has elephant rides

To the south of Patong Beach you can ride up into the hills and you will look down on Lucky Beach. This is a beach where you can ride elephants through the water, it looked very beautiful but part of us was a bit concerned about how the elephants were housed so we didn’t want to support them.

As you ride up the hills you see the elephants on the right hand side of the road, we saw two small elephants and we stopped and fed them some bananas and talked to the owners for a bit. The elephants were in a wooden pen but they said at night they slept across the road with more space. After we gave them some bananas they were dancing around in a flurry, not sure if they were stressed or what, but one of the elephants was just in a trance and wouldn’t stop.

We went next door to Sunshine View Restaurant and had a drink, the view at this place is to die for. Would definitely be a place to book in for a fancy dinner, ask for a seat looking out over the ocean, so beautiful. I had a pina colada and the boys had some whiskey and we watched the elephants below in the ocean, one of the tours had finished and they were walking up the hill back to their homes. It definitely looked like paradise looking down on the turquoise water, palm trees and greenery with elephants roaming around.

Freedom Beach

We rode down from Lucky Beach and onto a dirt track (thanks to Laws’ Dad for knowing where to go) the dirt track winds around to Freedom Beach. We didn’t go down to the beach but just rode by, there were a few bars leading into the beach entrance and lots of people going down there so it’s obviously a popular spot. We stopped along the way to check out the view and I flew the drone for a bit.

As we were driving out of the dirt road and it comes back to a concrete road, you come through this section of really run down houses, basically looked like people were squatting and salvaging what they could from some severely decayed houses. Then we turned back onto the main road and continued back into Patong Beach.
