North Head Island – Perfect for a morning out
February 2021
My man lives in Bowen (and maybe I will move here soon – oh me oh my) so we have been exploring it a bit. Bowen is surrounded by so much natural beauty. Gorgeous beaches and the coast line has lots of big boulders and little bays – perfect for drone shots.
We took the kayaks out for the day and decided to paddle across to North Head Island. Little did we know it was only a ten minute kayak as it is super close! We walked around the rocks on the Bowen side of the island to get to the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself is only quite small, we had a look inside and it was a sweaty little hotbox in there but offered a nice view. It was a great little morning adventure from Bowen and made for some nice drone photography, so definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area.
Local knowledge (aka my main squeeze) tells me that during the winter months, the tide gets low enough that you can walk across to the island, so if you don’t have a kayak you can wait for winter. There is also a lot of sea life around the rocks and it would be great for a snorkel, we saw fish jumping and lots of movement. We will go for a snorkel eventually and fill you in on what we see. The only thing I will say is that Bowen is really windy, so its a good idea to check with the weather man.

There’s another island behind North Head, called Stoney Island, it has accomodation on it and is on the list for exploration as well. It looked pretty beautiful from where we were standing.
