Getting lost in Herveys Range
December 2020 and April 2021
Herveys Range is a great place to explore, we’ve been up there about three times now and we see something different every time. There is still so much more I want to go back and check out, hopefully this can give you a bit of an idea of what you will find up there! It’s worth the drive and a great day trip!
Herveys Range Heritage Tea House
The tea house is so cool, the food is cheap and big and its a real sweet little place to explore. Definitely recommend the scones and jam and cream. Just remember it shuts early, like 1pm so get in early or you miss out – we always forget this and miss out 🙁 hehe
The tea house is at the top of the range, you take a right turn onto Thornton Gap Rd, there is a sign on the main road that says Tea House and points you in the right direction 🙂
Hervey’s Range Look out
The look out is basically on the right as you get to the top of the range, just before the tea house.
The lookout is actually really nice, plenty of parking space and you can climb up a little path behind the parking that leads to lots of large boulders with trees growing out of them. It would be the perfect spot to go for sunset or sunrise, take a little picnic – its on our to do list now 🙂 Awesome view of the valley.
Pages Road
We went for a walk along Pages Rd, there’s a fair bit of space for parking at the top of it. It’s an old road, dirty track and you definitely need a 4WD if you are going to drive it.
Pretty little area to explore, we were looking for the abandoned train tunnels but we are yet to find them. But still a nice area to walk around and Lawson nearly trod on a brown snake so that was scary. Cool spot to drone and get some shots of the valley. The train tunnels are along this track – we just haven’t found them yet!
Split Rock
Me and Laws went for an explore up Hervey’s Range after one of my bosses at work had told me about Split Rock and how to get there. He said it was a sweet spot and he was 100% right. You go up the range and then take a right turn onto Sharps Rd – its opposite the turn off to the Heritage Tea Rooms. You drive down Sharps Rd about 2.5 km, you will see the large boulders from the road on your left. We parked off to the side of the road, jumped the fence and walked towards the boulder. It’s a pretty easy little hike, although once you get to the rock you have to shimmy up between rocks and Spider-Man your way up. There were a few tricky spots and I wouldn’t recommend going solo for this one.
There is a cave at the base of the rocks, its nice and cool in there, so good for a little break and there is some writing on the walls. We added our names with some charcoal, not sure how long it will last.
We climbed up onto the boulder, the greatest view at the top. The world looks like it goes on forever.
At the top of the boulder we found a pile of rocks, so Laws started making a little rock tower and underneath he found a jar with a letter in it.
The letter was dated back to 24th April 2005 and was from a group of people that went to Souls Boarding School in Charters Towers.
They named the rock “Souls Rock”. Pretty cool piece of history to find, we put it back in the jar for the next explorers to find 🙂 Whatever you decide to call this rock, it is really an awesome spot to check out the world from.
